Questions remain after old York County furniture factory fire

STEWARTSTOWN BOROUGH, Pa. (WHTM) – A massive fire at an old furniture factory in Stewartstown over the weekend is still smoldering days later.

Chief of Eureka Fire Todd Gibney says smoldering areas are contained and cannot spread. He’s asking residents not to call 911 if they see smoke as crews do have an eye on the building.

Gibney is calling this fire at the old furniture factory on Mill Road the largest in the borough’s history and likely one of the biggest in the history of York County. He said they’ve always feared a fire starting at the old factory and there was a 13-page pre-plan outlining what to do.

The plan accounted for the possibility of losing several homes and businesses in the area. At this time a nearby home only experienced warped siding and the vacant Stewartstown Sweets building had siding melted.

Embers and ash flew for more than three and a half miles from the scene where the 250,000-square-foot building went up in flames.

There’s still no word on how the fire started and police are asking anyone in the area with video to look for suspicious activity between 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Southern Regional Police and the State Police Fire Marshal are investigating.
