‘Problematic’: Sideshow and street race in Northern California leads to 100 mph crash and fire, police say

(FOX40.COM) — A pursuit of a vehicle that allegedly operated at nearly 100 mph, crashed, and caused a fire after a sideshow or street race in Sutter County sparked local law enforcement to speak out.

At around 10 p.m. on Sunday, the Yuba City Police Department (YCPD) said it was involved in a vehicle pursuit with a silver Infiniti in the area of Franklin Road. The Infiniti successfully evaded YCPD.

What is a sideshow and why is California law enforcement cracking down on them?

Later, as Sutter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) monitored traffic at Railroad Avenue and Stewart Road, a silver Infiniti reportedly “blew through the stop sign at about 100 MPH.” Deputies said the Infiniti proceeded to the area of Bogue Road and Garden Highway and traveled northbound on Garden Highway at a “consistent speed of roughly 100 MPH.”

SCSO said it attempted to pull over the vehicle, but it continued to flee northbound. After a “short pursuit,” the Infiniti crashed into a curb at Garden Highway and Epley Drive and collided with a power pole and bus stop.

As a result of the crash, the engine compartment of the vehicle caught fire, according to SCSO. First responders removed the passenger and driver from the vehicle. The driver was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center with what deputies said were non-life threatening injuries.

SCSO said that both occupants were highly intoxicated, and alcohol was located in the vehicle. Due to the nature of this incident, deputies said a DUI warrant was issued for the driver’s blood sample.

“It is believed this vehicle is a result of Street Racing and Sideshows,” SCSO and YCPD said in a joint statement on social media. “We have found this to be problematic in our area, these types of events pose a danger to our community and should be reported to local law enforcement.”
