Why was Powerball delayed?

The drawing was delayed until 2:29 a.m. Sunday since one lottery was late completing the required pre-draw procedures.

"Tonight, we have one participating lottery that needs additional time to complete required pre-draw procedures, which have been enacted to protect the security and integrity of the Powerball game," read a statement on Powerball's website.

"Powerball game rules require that every single ticket sold nationwide be checked and verified against two different computer systems before the winning numbers are drawn. This is done to ensure that every ticket sold for the Powerball drawing has been accounted for and has an equal chance to win. Tonight, we have one jurisdiction that needs extra time to complete that pre-draw process."

Lottery officials advised players to hold onto their tickets and that "when the required pre-draw procedures are complete, the Powerball drawing will be performed under the supervision of lottery security officials and independent auditors."

"Please keep your tickets. We look forward to drawing the winning numbers as soon as possible," lottery officials said in a statement at 1:05 a.m. EST Sunday.

Not the first Powerball drawing delay

This isn't the first time there's been a delay in a large Powerball drawing.

The Nov. 7, 2022, drawing worth a record $2.04 billion was delayed more than nine hours into the next morning due to safety protocols.

The highly anticipated drawing was delayed because a participating lottery was still processing its sales and play data, the Multi-State Lottery Association said. It's not clear which lottery was affected. Powerball officials said they have "strict security requirements" that 48 participating lotteries must must meet before a drawing can occur.

The drawing was eventually won by a man from California.
