What’s that pounding sound? If you had listened, you’d know

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Rebecca Freeman has lived near Augusta National for more than 60 years, but she doesn’t think she’s heard anything like it.

“If I did, I don’t remember,” she said.

The sound: a pounding noise echoing through several neighborhoods noticed by those who live and work nearby.

“When we first heard it, everybody inside the building was going outside to see what was going on. We didn’t know if somebody was pounding against the building or what,” said Myles.

“It sounds like constant pounding over there. I don’t know what’s really going on. It’s all hidden back there,” said Ashley Brodhecker.

Back there is Augusta National Golf Club, renown for being tight lipped about it’s activities.

But on the pounding sound, the club tipped its hand in April saying an underground parking garage and a tunnel were on the way, and right on schedule, the sound of a pile driver.

“It’s a loud noise you can hear way over on the other side of town,” said William.

“When you’re working, does that wake you up from your nap?”

“Uh-Uh,” said William.

They now know what is behind the noise, and around here, folks are neighborly.

“Fine with me. I’m just glad to be a neighbor of Augusta National,” said Rebecca.

“Even when they are pounding?”

“Even when they’re pounding,” she said.

“Hardly even notice it. Now have gotten accustomed to it,” said Myles.

“Do you think the light sleepers want it to stop?”

“Oh, I’m sure,” said Ashley with a laugh.

So, this is true. If a pile driver goes to work in some woods, it makes a sound.
