Potential suspect in Palisade fire found dead

PALISADE, Colo. (KREX) — Officials are still investigating the fire that burned down a Palisade apartment building Friday morning, resulting in one fatality.

Officials say they have yet to determine the cause of the explosion that started the fire — but as of April 7, there is no evidence to suggest that an explosive device, a narcotics lab or any issue with utilities, such as natural gas, caused it. Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been started intentionally.

A potential suspect was identified Friday afternoon; the suspect’s phone was tracked to Lake County near Leadville. Local law enforcement officers were dispatched to the location where they found the suspect deceased upon arrival.

Officials say this is an isolated incident that poses no further danger to the community.

The investigation is active and there are no other details that can be released at this time. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
