Port City Brewing Company wins gold at World Beer Cup

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — Port City Brewing Company took top honors at the World Beer Cup, a competition which its website notes is known as the “‘Olympics of beer.'”

Port City, which is located at 3950 Wheeler Ave. in Alexandria, won gold for its Optimal Wit. The brewery describes the beer in this way: “Brewed in the traditional Belgian style, Optimal® Wit is crisp and citrusy with layers of flavor that evolve in the glass. Brewed with 100% Virginia grown wheat and the perfect balance of spices that include Spanish orange peel, coriander, and grains of paradise.”

The brewery shared news of the win on the X platform with a post that said: “OPTIMAL WIT JUST WON GOLD AT THE WORLD BEER CUP! IT’S THE BEST BELGIAN WIT IN THE WORLD!!!!”

Alexandria hosts community cookouts

Bill and Karen Butcher founded Port City Brewing Company in February 2011. Since that time, it has been recognized with awards for its beer, which Port City ships in the D.C. area throughout the Mid-Atlantic market.

“This is a great win for our team!” said Bill Butcher of the gold medal win. “With over 9000 beers in the competition, it is extremely difficult to win a medal at the World Beer Cup. Our team is dedicated to brewing truly world class beer and this award shows that their hard work pays off!”

In addition to featuring its flaghip Optima Wit and other selections at its tasting room in Alexandria, where visitors will find a rotation of food trucks and special events. Tours of the brewery on Wheeler Avenue also are available.
