Police: Letters on Bristol school’s message board altered to spell out racial slur

BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) – Letters on a Bristol, Tennessee elementary school’s marquee were altered to spell out a racial slur, according to police.

A Bristol, Tennessee Police Department (BTPD) spokesperson told News Channel 11 that lettering on Avoca Elementary School’s outdoor message board was altered to spell the slur.

A BTPD officer noticed the slur on the sign shortly before noon Monday and contacted Avoca Elementary’s school resource officer (SRO), who was doing routine work in the area after the weekend events at Bristol Motor Speedway. According to the BTPD, the SRO removed the offensive lettering on the sign until school personnel could further correct it.

The police department noted that within roughly 15 minutes of the first officer spotting the slur on the board, the SRO had removed the lettering.

Police report “no immediately apparent damage” to school property was found. The message board and letters were not damaged.

The BTPD asks that anyone with information regarding the incident or person responsible call 423-989-5600.
