Photos: Thunderstorms cause damage in Salem, trampoline flies into power lines

SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — Several residents are picking up the pieces after severe thunderstorms roared across the region leaving trees and power lines down in neighborhoods on May 26.

In Salem, trees could be seen thrown across yards, blocking the streets, and even on top of a car. The strong winds lifted one family’s trampoline, leaving it hanging on a power line on Kimball Avenue.

Martha Wade, a resident in Salem, said she thought the trampoline was gone after it blew over the fence. But, she heard from a family member, who lived down the street, that the trampoline was hanging in the pole.

“It was unbelievable because I have really big, huge flower pots and it didn’t just scoot them, it picked them up and they were flying,” recalled Wade.

Thousands of AEP customers without power after storms roar across region

Wade says the last time she experienced winds that strong was during the Drecho in 2012.

Several pieces of debris also covered the road on Apperson Drive. WFXR’s crews canvassed the area and found trees down in the Northview Apartment complex along with the damage to the Mexican Grill restaurant.

With heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts on Sunday, the storm knocked out power for more than 40,000 Appalachian Power customers.

Since crews have been working to restore services across Virginia.
