Peace Church Cemetery honors veterans with Memorial Day ceremony

JOPLIN, Mo. — “Peace Church Cemetery” volunteers are commemorating the ultimate sacrifice made by veterans through its annual Memorial Day ceremony.

This morning, the American Legion Post 13, community members and volunteers participated in a veterans tour – paying tribute to the 10 military veterans that are buried in the cemetery.

Those honored today served in the U.S. Civil War, the Spanish-American War, WWI, and WWII.

Attendees got a chance to learn a little history about the veterans, including where they grew up, their service story, and their family history.

Peace Church Cemetery volunteer Jim says Memorial Day weekend holds a special meaning to him.

“Those pool days or those trips to the lake or whatever, they get to take those because of these veterans. These veterans are special. This country wouldn’t be what it is. It wouldn’t amount to nothing. As we can see, some of the European countries or some of the countries across the world that do not have the same freedoms that we have, but we have them because of our veterans when they served and some died for our country,” said Jim Beeler, Peace Church Cemetery caretaker.

The tribute also featured a flag-setting ceremony that wrapped up with a gun salute and the playing of Taps.
