Parents of Brockton murder suspect Kahmari T. Price helped him escape, prosecutor says

BROCKTON — Tara Stone-Price knew her 16-year-old son, Kahmari, was in big trouble. He called saying there'd been a shooting at the homeless shelter in downtown Brockton. She later told police she and her husband picked him up in the parking lot of a nearby liquor store. She wouldn't say where they dropped him off.

"When she said goodbye to him, she understood that she wasn't going to see him for quite some time," prosecutor Alexander Zane said in court Monday afternoon, April 1.

On Monday morning, police had captured her son in Worcester. He had eluded cops for more than a year.

Kahmari T. Price, now 17, pleaded not guilty to murdering Mark A. Boyd, 33, of Quincy. A judge ordered him held without bail pending his next court hearing on May 1.

Surveillance video of February 2023 fatal shooting

The commonwealth gave new details Monday in what prosecutors allege occurred on Feb. 26, 2023, the night someone fatally shot Boyd in the face outside the MainSpring homeless shelter in Brockton. The following account is drawn from Zane's descriptions in court Monday.

Price's newly court-appointed lawyer, Thomas Jon Iovieno, declined to comment when reached Tuesday afternoon, saying he had just received the case.

Price looked on from behind plexiglass Monday as Zane laid out the state's allegations. It was about 10:30 p.m. when a group of about 10 people stood on the staircase and front porch of Father Bill's shelter at 54 N. Main St. Citing surveillance video, Zane said someone wearing a dark, puffy winter jacket with a green triangle symbol on the upper left comes into the frame.

The crowd moves out of range of that camera but a city camera, Zane said, shows a flash of light that prosecutors say was a gun firing. A bullet struck Boyd on his right cheek, passed through his head and lodged into his spine. He was later pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Medical Center. Price allegedly ran away from the shelter toward Hereford Street.

According to the state, a witness saw someone take the distinctive jacket from Price. Responding to what the prosecutor called three or four phone calls from Price to his parents, they showed up in a GMC Acadia and collected their son in the parking lot of a nearby liquor store. Zane said Price had to scale a fence to reach his parents.

Added to most wanted list in October 2023

Police put out a warrant for Price's arrest two days after the shooting, Zane said. The search for Price dragged on and, on Oct. 11 2023, state police put Price on their "most wanted" list.

Arrested in Worcester Monday morning

On Monday morning, members of the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, with assistance from the State Police Critical Technical Investigations Team, tracked Price to an address on West Boylston Street in Worcester, where he was arrested without incident at 9:41 a.m., a state police spokesperson said.

Zane said they located Price living in "basically an empty apartment" under a different name.

Charges against parents dismissed

While Price was a fugitive, authorities charged his father, 41-year-old Brian Price of Brockton, with accessory after the fact of murder. Court records show prosecutors dismissed that charge about two months later. Stone-Price was also charged as an accessory after the fact of murder and with witness intimidation. Her charges were also later dismissed.

Under Massachusetts law, persons 14 and older who are charged with murder are automatically charged as adults.
