‘Paddle for a cure’ pickleball tournament in Woodbury on Saturday

The Huntington Disease Society of America’s Minnesota Chapter will be hosting a charity pickleball event Saturday at Legacy Pickleball Club, 2122 Wooddale Drive, in Woodbury. The Pickleball Tournament & Fun event is a family-oriented event aiming to “paddle for a cure,” with educational opportunities to learn more about Huntington’s disease and HDSA’s work.

Huntington’s disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain, and currently has no cure. According to the HDSA, there are over 41,000 asymptomatic Americans and more than 200,000 at-risk of inheriting HD.

Saturday check-ins begin for the advanced and intermediate attendees at 8 a.m., and beginners at 10 a.m. with the first tournament beginning at 9 a.m. The tournament costs $60 to play in teams of two, $30 for individuals, and $20 for fun play only, open to all levels of players. Pre-registration is required for players in the competitive categories, and closes Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.,. Registration is open through the day of the event for those taking part in the “fun play and spectators” event.

All ticket levels include a lunch, and there will be paddles available for use. Tournament prizes include a $50 restaurant gift card to each player for first place, $30 for second place and $20 for third.

Participants and attendees will have the opportunity to get instruction from a certified pickleball professional and drawings for prizes. Proceeds will support the HDSA and their mission to raise awareness about Huntington’s disease.
