New Orleans school zone cameras deactivated for summer

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with the New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) announced that all school zone traffic cameras have been deactivated on Friday, May 24.

This is due to schools being out for the summer break.

Cameras will turn off at 4:45 p.m. and will be reactivated once school resumes in August.

An ordinance signed by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell on May 16, 2023, expanded school zone eligibility from grades K-7 to K-12.

The ordinance will allow for the installation of signage, designated crosswalks, stripping and other traffic control; devices at all elementary and secondary schools in the city.

DPW officials said the ordinance will be fully implemented at the start of the 2024 to 2025 school year.
