Over fifty years after it set the American sports car racing scene on fire, the 1965 Shelby GT350R is going back into production. The Original Venice Crew - a partnership between original Shelby American employees Pete Brock, Jim Marietta and Ted Sutton - announced this week that it's building 36 officially-licensed Shelby GT350R continuation cars.

We'd say these continuation cars will be as good as the originals, but they might actually be better. That's because each features experimental upgrades designed by Brock back in 1965, and an independent rear suspension designed by Ford in 1964. Brock's upgrades include a new front valance, a new plexiglass rear window, and plexiglass three-quarter windows.

"The revised shape of the window improves the car’s interior aerodynamics by promoting better airflow for driver comfort, said Brock in a statement. "The new front valance has a much closer identity with the original Mustang front-end while increasing the efficiency of airflow to cool the engine."

"While these changes may look subtle, they combine with the new suspension to dramatically change the character of the car."

The Original Venice Crew will start with a 1965 Mustang donor car, and modify the body to competition specs. Its iron-block 289-cubic-inch V8 will be sourced from the Carroll Shelby Engine company and mated to a period-correct four-speed gearbox. And just like the original 1965 GT350R, each will be painted Wimbledon White. As they should be.

Starting price has been set at $250,000 and the Original Venice Crew says production will begin this fall.
