Nail salon owner staying open for prom despite car smashing through storefront

BELMONT, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — As employees at iColor Nail Bar helped customers get settled, and got started on pedicures and manicures, the landlord was outside trying to coordinate repairs to the storefront’s window after a car slammed into it early Friday morning.

“My son looked at my phone, and said, ‘Dad, there’s a car in the window, stuck in the window,’” said owner Steve Nie.

Nie has been in the nail industry for 20 years; six at the location on South Point Road. It’s safe to say this was a first.

“We found out this car slammed into the window, and a lady, a shopper from Harris Teeter, she kind of hit the wrong pedal,” he told Queen City News.

A picture shows the scene right after the crash. The driver is fine, and no one else was hurt.
Nie came to his salon to see glass and bent metal all over the floor. Immediately, though, he started cleaning knowing not opening wasn’t an option.

“Because I know today is a very tough day for all the high school girls,” Nie said. “They have a high school prom.”

Nie and his nail techs are busy with appointments after school, so the teens can get their nails done before the big dance. Knowing how much this day means to them, Nie decided to keep the doors (and now windows) open.

“Lot of young girls are going to prom this weekend,” said customer Rose Planer. “So, they’ll be thrilled that it’s still open, and they can get their nails done for prom.”

By the end of the day, wood will cover the hole in front of the store, and eventually new glass will be installed. All in all, Nie is feeling fortunate.

“Everything’s OK,” Nie said. “She’s fine. Nobody got hurt.”
