A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 90-year-old was found dead in a house.

The woman's body was discovered by emergency services at a house on Bolde Way in Spital, Wirral at about 11:20 BST on Tuesday.

Her family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers, Merseyside Police said.

A 48-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, both from Wirral, are being questioned in custody.

The force said house-to-house, CCTV and forensic inquiries were being carried out and a mobile police station had been set up.

Merseyside Police said it had referred the case to the watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as the force had been investigating a recent allegation of theft on behalf of the woman.

Det Ch Supt Mark Baker said: “Our thoughts and condolences are very much with the woman’s family and friends at this very sad time.

“We are still in the very early stages of our enquiries and I would ask people to avoid speculating about what has happened."

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
