Editorial Note, April 25, 2024, 2:31 p.m.: Since publication, Riley has been euthanized. A WRBL viewer called stating they had made contact with Columbus Animal Control (CACC) requesting to pay Riley’s adoption fee. CACC informed the caller that Riley had been euthanized per the owner’s request.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL)— Earlier this week WRBL reported on 24 pets being recovered from an abandoned Columbus home. Now, some of those animals are looking for their forever homes.

Monday, a total of 20 cats and 4 dogs were pulled from a home on 17th Ave. According to neighbors, the owner was seen leaving in a U-Haul nearly two weeks ago leaving the pets locked inside the home.

Word spread on Facebook, and concerned Columbus citizens took it upon themselves to expedite the extraction process.

Columbus Animal Control was set to work with Columbus Police and enter the residence Thursday after a 72-hour waiting period; however, the two organizations came together Monday to recover the animals.

Now, some are already available for adoption.

Two of the labs, now named Riley and Jasper, are listed on Columbus Animal Control’s website as adoptable.

According to neighbor Claire O’Connor who first noticed the animals inside the home, Jasper is from one of Riley’s litters.

18 of the 20 cats are also available for adoption at this time.

Animal Control is located at 4910 Milgen Road. Their hours are listed as Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This weekend Columbus Animal Control will have two off-site adoption events.

Saturday, April 27 animals will be along the 1000 block of Broadway during Market Days starting at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 28, they will be at the Petco on Whittlesey from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
