Meals on Wheels Western Michigan celebrates 40 years of service

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — More than 200 people gathered at Millennium Park Sunday for a community walk and 5k to celebrate and fundraise for Meals on Wheels Western Michigan.

The organization celebrated 40 years of serving seniors in West Michigan through its programs of food delivery, dining sites and food pantries.

“We want to make sure that we can be there always to make sure that no seniors are hungry or forgotten in our community,” Lisa Wideman, the president and CEO of Meals on Wheels Western Michigan, said.

This is the third year of the March for Meals community walk. Registration opened at 9 a.m. with the 5k beginning around 10 a.m.

Wideman said that events like this help show the community what they do and raise awareness about the growing senior population in West Michigan.

“The number of seniors is growing nationally, and we are definitely seeing that along with rising costs of food and labor. It is certainly a pinpoint for us and the community support here is so vital,” Wideman said.

She said there are many ways people can help by volunteering to help deliver or prepare meals or by donating to the organization. You can find out more about the organization here.
