Man wanted on murder charge in Hillsborough drug overdose arrested in Alabama

A Tampa man wanted in connection to another man’s fatal overdose last summer has been arrested in Alabama.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force arrested Altwain T. Carlisle Jr., 29, in Enterprise, Alabama, on Tuesday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. He was wanted on charges including first-degree murder that resulted from the unlawful sale of a controlled substance.

Deputies said Carlisle sold fentanyl to Dhane Hogan, 23, of Tampa, who thought he was buying cocaine and overdosed on Aug. 1.

According to search warrant affidavits filed in the case, Hogan’s partner found him unresponsive that morning in a bedroom in the home they shared in the Del Rio neighborhood. The investigation led to Carlisle, and detectives set up an undercover drug buy with him later that day.

Detectives took Carlisle into custody and found several types of drugs on him, including fentanyl, cocaine, oxycodone and marijuana, records show. He was booked on charges of fentanyl trafficking, delivery of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell and marijuana possession and released from the Hillsborough County jail the next day on bail totaling $34,000, records show.

Meanwhile, detectives continued to investigate Hogan’s death and by March 26 had obtained an arrest warrant for Carlisle for the murder charge. A search of his and Hogan’s phones indicated Carlisle sold drugs to Hogan on July 21 and July 30, the affidavits state.

Already wanted on the murder charge, Carlisle failed to show up for an April 17 status hearing in the case stemming from his August arrest, records show.

Carlisle faces additional drug trafficking charges in Alabama. He was being held Thursday in the Coffee County jail.

A tip submitted to Crime Stoppers led to Carlisle’s arrest, according to Hillsborough deputies.
