Man arrested after Van Buren Co. home invasion

COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a man who broke into a Van Buren County house was arrested.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office said that around 6:30 p.m. Monday, it received a report of a man trespassing on a property on County Road 380 near the intersection of 49th Street in Columbia Township.

When deputies arrived, the sheriff’s office said the man had left the area. However, two hours later, a neighbor said the man had returned to the property and broke into the house. He was seen in the window holding a baseball bat.

The sheriff’s office said deputies made announcements over a squad car PA for the suspect to leave the house, but he did not. Deputies then forced the door open and found the suspect armed with a hammer. A Taser was used but did not hit the suspect, who was later taken into custody.

There were no reports of injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

The suspect was taken to the Van Buren County Jail on charges of third-degree home invasion and aggravated assault on a police officer.

*Correction: A previous version of this article misstated the road from which the trespassing report came. It was County Road 380. We regret the error, which has been fixed.
