Letter to the editor: Abortion shouldn't be banned

The topic of abortion has been an extremely disruptive conversation within the city of Canton. It has become an extremely sensitive topic in general. Arguments break out at almost every social event. People have become too comfortable with breaking out in argument during private events or school.

Abortion is a big problem in general. Many people are struggling with the fact that abortion may be banned. For example, many women get raped and impregnated, or find out about fatalities or disabilities in their babies and want to terminate their pregnancy. If abortion is banned, this will not be an option.

Disabilities can be an extremely expensive liability for a mother after a baby is born, and it should be her decision on whether she keeps that baby or not. If a woman is raped, impregnated, and forced to give birth to a baby, it may cause mental distress to the mother or resentment toward the child. This can result in child neglect.

In my opinion, women should have the right to an abortion if the fetus is under 12 weeks old, the only exceptions after 12 weeks are if one of the following occurs: the mother has been raped and has become pregnant, if the mother has been informed that she or the baby will die or has risk of dying when she gives birth, or if the mother has been informed that the baby may be born physically disabled.

This gives the mother time to realize she is pregnant, have her first ultrasound, and decide whether she would like to keep the baby.
