‘Just such cruelty’: Son recounts moments after his mother, child she was babysitting, were attacked, in home

MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — When Erick Mendez got close to his home on Talleyrand Avenue, he couldn’t imagine what he would see next.

“I hear screams; I’m like stunned. I don’t know what’s going on,” said Mendez.

He was horrified at the sight of a two-year-old boy whose face and head were burned. Mendez says his mother was babysitting a child who was now jumping around in pain in the family’s living room.

“I was kinda traumatized seeing the baby like that,” said Mendez.

Mendez’s mother said a man followed her into her house, beat her, burned her, and robbed her.

Mendez says his mom’s eyelashes were burned off when the man used a lighter and possibly a spray to attack her.

“I was just stunned at what I’m seeing right now, like, who could have just done that? That’s just such cruelty,” said Mendez.

The horror of the attack still haunts him.

“Who could do such a thing to a little baby?” Mendez asked.

Monroe Police are checking neighbors’ cameras, trying to identify and catch the attacker.

“I hope he’s in jail for like the rest of his life. I’m thinking about that baby’s future. Is that going to affect him in any type of way, his face, is he going to go back to normal? There’s a lot of stuff that could happen to him,” said Mendez.
