Huntsville shooting suspect’s charge upgraded to murder, victim identified

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A suspect in a shooting on Hillandale Road last week has had his charge upgraded to murder after the victim died from their injuries.

The shooting happened on Hillandale Road around 9 p.m. on April 16. It was initially reported as an assault. Police confirmed a man was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where he was in critical care until he died, but did not confirm what day the man passed.

The suspect, 38-year-old Jametric Bernard Collier, was arrested the next day in the area of Meridian Street and charged with attempted murder, according to HPD.

HPD said Collier’s charge was upgraded to murder after the victim, identified by court documents as Tony Johnson, died from his injuries.

The shooting happened during a confrontation that began on University Drive and ended on Hillandale Road, according to court documents.

Court records also show Collier was arrested on April 19 for murder.

Collier is currently being held at the Madison County Jail without bond. He had an Aniah’s Law hearing set for Wednesday, April 24.
