High winds blow back into Las Vegas valley; wind advisory issued

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Strong winds are blowing into the Las Vegas valley and will increase in strength as Thursday progresses. A wind advisory goes into effect at 1 p.m. and ends 24 hours later on Friday.

Gusts are expected to reach 40 to 45 mph in the valley and as high as 60 mph in the higher elevations. As of Thursday 6:30 a.m., wind gusts were already more than 30 mph at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and nearly 50 mph at Kyle Canyon.

The winds will be strong enough to blow unsecured items such as trash cans and patio furniture and could make driving more difficult for high-profile vehicles.

As Friday slides into Saturday, a winter storm is expected to hit the Spring Mountains, according to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas. A winter storm watch goes into effect Saturday at noon. Four to 12 inches of snow are possible on Mt. Charleston and any visitors should be prepared for wintry driving conditions.

That weather system could also bring rain showers to the Las Vegas valley on Saturday.
