Halstead Cemetery open for Memorial Day in wake of storms

HALSTEAD, Kan. (KSNW) — Clean-up continues across Kansas in the wake of Sunday’s severe weather which produced two confirmed tornadoes, and extreme winds.

One of the areas hard-hit by the storm system was Harvey County. The National Weather Service confirmed the county was hit by a Derecho.

Significant damage was reported in Burrton, Newton, and Halstead. One of the the locations hit hard by Sunday’s strong winds was Halstead Cemetery.

After the Derecho blew through Harvey County, the cemetery lost trees and was littered with downed branches and twigs. The damage left the city scrambling to clear debris ahead of Memorial Day Weekend.

The City of Halstead says, thanks to volunteers, the cemetery is ready for visitors this weekend. Volunteers from local Mennonite communities spent a combined 600 hours removing downed trees and branches from the cemetery.

Why flags are at half-staff only part of Memorial Day

The city cannot thank them enough for this selfless act of kindness and generosity which made the impossible possible for those wishing to decorate, visit, and pay their respects this weekend in the cemetery.

We cannot say it enough this week, but thank you to all those who volunteer and serve in any capacity to make things better for our community.
