Groundbreaking held in Raleigh County for the upgraded Glen Morgan Treatment Plant

GLEN MORGAN, WV (WVNS) — The Shady Spring Public Service District is set to see some change.

County officials broke ceremonial ground Monday, April 22, 2024, on the Glen Morgan Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant will receive around $9.5 million in renovations.

The project started four years ago, when Raleigh County Commission President David Tolliver spoke with Shady Spring PSD manager Jerry Smith about expanding service to households in Grandview.

“People out in Grandview wanted sewer. Well, I talked to Jerry, and he said, ‘Hey, the plant’s not big enough. We’ve got to build a bigger plant,'” recalled Tolliver. “So, after two years of being threatened and everything, we gave them money to help them build it.”

The funds come from federal and state agencies, along with money from Raleigh County commission, and will allow the county to replace and expand the plant equipment.

If wastewater isn’t treated properly, it can harm wildlife and fish and even contaminate drinking water.

The new treatment plant could also be good for the economy.

“Everybody knows infrastructure’s the big thing,” said Raleigh County Commissioner Greg Duckworth. “Having water and a place to put wastewater. The Shady districts’ growing like crazy, new homes going up, and you’ve got to have a place for wastewater and a place around that, so this expansion’s very important for this end of the county.”

The upgrade will allow the plant to process 1.6 million gallons of water daily.
