EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — One person is dead in what may be a road rage-related shooting in the parking lot at Gadsden High School, according to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 2:45 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies were called out to the high school by a security guard and another witness about a man “down in the roadway.”

No students were on campus because the school year had ended on Thursday. The incident is not believed to have involved any students or school personnel, the Sheriff’s Office said.

When deputies arrived, they found an unresponsive male, no age given, with emergency medical crews attempting lifesaving measures. The victim, who has not been identified, died from an apparent gunshot wound, officials with DASO said.

Witnesses told deputies that two vehicles entered the school’s parking lot. Two males got out of their vehicles. The younger male had something in his hand and pointed it at the older male, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

The victim then fell to the ground and the younger male got back into what was described as a white pickup truck and left the area going eastbound on NM Highway 28, Sheriff’s officials said.

Gadsden High School has been placed on lockdown after the incident, the district said.

The district said no students were on campus since the school year ended the day before, and no staff members were injured.

Teachers, administrators, and other staff were on campus on Friday, the district said.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priority. Law enforcement is
on the scene and managing the situation, and we are cooperating fully with their
investigation,” according to the district’s statement.

Community members are urged to avoid the area to allow emergency responders to do their work, the district said.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident,” said Travis Dempsey,
superintendent for the school district. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our
students and staff and will continue to work closely with law enforcement.”

This is a developing story and KTSM is working to learn more about this incident.
