Franciscan Peace Center launches election season virtual film and discussion

Apr. 24—The Franciscan Peace Center will launch a virtual film and discussion series titled "Movies That Matter: Informing Your Vote" in May. This initiative aims to engage participants in conversations about social issues ahead of the upcoming election cycle.

The series will offer monthly access to documentaries addressing a spectrum of topics relevant to voters, including immigration, gun violence, overcoming partisanship, care of the Earth, voting rights, and more. Each film will be available for streaming over a week-long period, providing ample opportunity for reflection and dialogue.

The first film, "Building the American Dream," sheds light on the exploitation of immigrant labor within the construction industry. Set in Texas, the documentary follows the stories of resilient individuals fighting for justice amidst systemic injustices.

After registering, participants will receive a link to personally view the film online at their convenience between May 15-28. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in post-screening discussions via Zoom, choosing from two scheduled "talkback" sessions to accommodate varying schedules. These sessions, slated for 10 a.m. May 29 and 7 p.m. May 30 will provide a platform for reflection, dialogue, and community building.

There is no cost associated with viewing the films or participating in the discussion sessions. Interested individuals will need to register online at https://form.jotform.com/241004575244045 to secure their spot in this transformative series.

The Franciscan Peace Center, established by the Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton, provides programming that addresses systemic issues integrating spirituality with the mission of promoting nonviolence and advocating for social justice, including immigration reform and human rights.
