Former HGTV star sentenced to 4 years in jail, has to pay nearly $10M

CALIFORNIA (WJW) – A former HGTV star was sentenced Tuesday to four years in jail in connection to multi-million dollar scams.

According to a press release from the County of Santa Clara, the 58-year-old former star of “Flip It to Win It,” Charles “Todd” Hill, was sentenced to four years in jail and ordered to pay back close to $10 million after committing real estate and financial fraud against 11 victims.

“Flip It to Win It” was a TV show where HIll bought dilapidated homes to fix them up and resell them for profit. According to the release, Hill instead spent millions on overbudget remodels, laundered the profits and pocketed millions of dollars.

“Some see the huge amount of money in Silicon Valley real estate as a business opportunity,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said, according to the release. “Others, unfortunately, see it as a criminal opportunity – and we will hold those people strictly accountable.”

Hill was convicted in 2023 of multiple fraud schemes, including a Ponzi scheme before the show. He was also indicted in November of 2019 after he committed multiple frauds against multiple victims, according to the release.

According to the release, evidence shows that Hill spent the laundered money on an apartment in San Francisco, hotels, vacations and luxury cars.

Last September, Hill was convicted by plea of grand theft against all victims and admitted the aggravated white-collar enhancements.

According to the release, victims who spoke at the Tuesday hearing said they were still suffering financial and professional damages from the fraud.

Hill was ordered to pay back restitution in the amount of $9,402,678.43 and serve 10 years on probation.
