Food banks in Kern County receive new cold storage equipment

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Monday was a big day for 20 food pantries in Kern County, thanks to a nearly $230,000 grant.

That money allowed the Wonderful Community Food Center, at CAPK Food Bank, to distribute some much needed equipment for the food banks, including 35 commercial-size refrigerators and 20 commercial freezers. California Department of Social Services and California Department of Food and Agriculture awarded the grant as part of the “Reach & Resiliency Round 2” program.

This program allows the food banks to distribute more fresh produce and protein to their neighborhood communities. Sergio Jara is with the Family Life Christian Fellowship, which holds monthly events where the community is fed and clothes are given to those in need.

“These refrigerators and freezers will really help out for the capacity of people around the community. We’re in an area where there’s a really high demand and need for what we do here,” said Jara. “It’s a small step for the high demand that there is. In order to feed the need, or meet the need there’s a much higher demand than what we’re getting, but it’s going to help start that process.”

Besides the appliances, shelving and hand trucks were also part of the equipment donated on Monday.
