ARLINGTON, Va. (DC News Now) — First Lady Dr. Jill Biden delivered remarks at the IMAGINE conference at Amazon’s HQ2, focusing on engaging women in medical research.

Her appearance at the conference came two days after President Joe Biden signed an executive order to expand funding for research in areas addressing women’s health. He requested Congress to direct $12 billion in funding toward the effort.

“These historic actions will make sure that women’s health is no longer overlooked or left behind,” the First Lady said.

She pointed to a 1970s study seeking to understand the relationship between going through menopause and risk of heart attacks.

“3,341 people were selected for that study. All of them men,” she said. “Women’s health research has been overlooked and underfunded.”

She also noted that efforts to fund research and medical care for women could boost the economy, saying it could add $1 trillion globally by the year 2040.

“When we combine that momentum with the possibility of technology, we can imagine a new world for women’s health,” she said.
