Man struck and killed by vehicle on 101 in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — A man walking on northbound Highway 101 in San Jose was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday at around 3:40 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Morning commuters continued to face severe delays after all lanes reopened just after 6 a.m.

The fatal pedestrian crash happened in the northbound lanes of Highway 101 south of Berryessa Road and north of McKee Road. CHP officers responded to a call at 3:40 a.m. of a pedestrian walking in the slow lane. Arriving officers located a man deceased on the highway after he was struck by a 2006 Chrysler.

The Chrysler’s driver, Maria Ortega, 62, of San Jose, pulled over and called the police, CHP said. Ortega suffered moderate injuries in the crash, according to CHP. There was a 58-year-old passenger in the vehicle who was uninjured. Both of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing safety belts.

No arrests were made in the incident.

A coroner was called to the scene at 4:29 a.m., according to a CHP incident log. The identity of the man killed has not been released.

By 6:15 a.m., the traffic backup extended up to 5 miles from the incident location. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes and avoid the area.
