Dump truck and box truck overturn in Godwin Blvd crash in Suffolk; 1 airlifted

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Godwin Boulevard in Suffolk was closed for more than three hours on Friday morning after a four-vehicle crash involving a dump truck and a box truck.

The Godwin Blvd. crash as well as a major fatal wreck on Route 58 near the Suffolk/Chesapeake line caused traffic nightmares on Friday in the area. The crash on 58 had an 11-mile backup and closed part of 58 for nearly 8 hours.

The Godwin crash happened around 7:16 a.m. in the 5000 block of Godwin Blvd., at Moore Farm Lane just south of Chuckatuck.

Police say an SUV driver attempted to make a left turn from Moore Farm Lane onto northbound Godwin Blvd., but failed to yield the right of way to the dump truck. The dump truck then struck the SUV in a T-bone collision.

That led to the dump truck striking a box truck, causing both vehicles to overturn in the road. The dump truck also lost its dirt load in the process.

The driver of the box truck was pinned and had to be extricated by Suffolk Fire & Rescue before being airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the SUV, a passenger in the SUV and the dump truck driver all had minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

No one was injured in the fourth car, a sedan that struck the loose dirt in the road.

Police say the roadway reopened at 10:50 a.m.
