Deadly shootings at Anaheim senior living complex ruled a murder-suicide

The shooting that left two dead at an Anaheim senior living complex on Thursday has been officially ruled a murder-suicide, according to police.

The Anaheim Police Department said in a news release Friday morning that emergency personnel responded to reports of a shooting at 891 S. State College Blvd. at 3:40 p.m.

Upon arrival, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She later died at a local hospital.

That victim was identified as 59-year-old Anaheim resident Ana Monterrosa, manager of the apartment complex.

Joe Guerrero, a resident at the complex, said he was speaking to Monterrosa in her office when the shooting occurred.

“He just came up to her and shot her four times,” Guerrero said. “I just can’t believe what happened. I thought he was going to shoot me next, but he just looked at me and took off.”

Responding law enforcement officers identified the suspect as Brian Lawrence, a 67-year-old resident of the complex who returned to his apartment after allegedly shooting Monterrosa.

Following a standoff, officers entered his third-floor apartment at 9:30 p.m. and found Lawrence dead.

It was ruled that Lawrence died by suicide. Anaheim police said there are no outstanding suspects.

No other details, including a motive and the nature of the relationship between Monterrosa and Lawrence, were immediately made available.
