The Mustangs head into a full slate of spring sports after Easter weekend.

Girls Tennis

Starting the season on Thursday at Waukee Northwest, the Mustangs look to build upon their 2-12 inaugural season.

This year’s team features a load of seniors, as eight were juniors last season. Amelia Ehlert and Kaitlyn Lynskey led the team with four match wins last season while fellow senior Isabelle Soults sat in Position 1 for most of the season.

Boys Tennis

DCG heads into its second season as a program looking to make some strides after a 2-16 finish as a team. Not only was DCG a new team, but of the 16 players on the active roster, eight were freshmen and another five were sophomores- competing against many teams with years of experience and development in established programs.

That leaves plenty of room for growth, especially as the only position that is lost is Position 1, as Dylan Rusch graduated. But sophomore Luke Lampe took on some of those top matchups already as a freshman. Brendan Fitzhugh had the team’s most match wins last year (2) in Position 6.

Their season starts April 2 at Newton.

Girls Golf

With the boys team shifting to fall action, the Mustang girls are the only team on the links this spring. Their season begins Monday, captained by senior Mackenzie Towne.

Laura Klaessy led the team with a sub-50 stroke average the past two seasons but is now graduated. Towne steps into a leading position with a 59.5-stroke combined average, fourth-best on the team last season. That showed some great dedication and growth from her sophomore year that placed her ninth on the varsity roster, with three extra strokes per round.

With another year of eligibility, junior Sydney Miller is the team’s top-returning scorer from 2023 after hitting an average of 59.

Boys Soccer (0-1)

The Mustangs’ season started with a 4-1 loss at Johnston on Monday.

After going into halftime tied 1-1 thanks to a Ben Jackson goal on a Brogan Fuller assist, DCG surrendered three late goals to fall on the road against the Dragons. The team has a week to reset before its second game on Tuesday hosting Oskaloosa. DCG is 9-0 all-time against the Indians.

Girls Soccer (1-0)

With a 2-0 win over Johnston on Monday, the Mustangs have won their season-opener four years running. Stats were not immediately available.

Despite that opening day win streak, the Mustangs haven’t started out on a three-game win streak since 2013. DCG will face two metro schools — Ankeny and Waukee Northwest — on Friday and Saturday at Ankeny’s invitational, looking to stop that streak in impressive fashion.
