Dayton police officer arrested on charges of strangulation, dating violence

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department said an officer with the City of Dayton Police Department is accused of strangulation, dating violence and criminal mischief.

Deputies say 32-year-old Ryan Fern is the officer being accused of committing these crimes.

According to deputies, the victim told them Fern had been out with friends, and when he came home early Wednesday, the two of them started arguing.

Investigators believe that the argument escalated with Fern destroying things around the apartment and then gathering his belongings as if he were going to leave.

Deputies say the victim followed him toward the door − preparing to lock it after he left but instead, Fern turned around and strangled her.

Eventually, they say Fern let go of her and then took off.

The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Dayton Police Department released a statement that Fern has been a police officer there since October 2022 and is also a military police officer with the Ohio Army National Guard.

“Upon learning of the charges, the Dayton Police Department immediately suspended Officer Fern’s employment with the city, without pay, pending the Sheriff’s Office’s investigation into these allegations,” the statement said.

Deputies say Fern turned himself in Wednesday morning and is now in the Boone County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond.
