Daughter remembers mother after triple murder in North Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Over a week after a woman was discovered shot and killed in North Las Vegas, her daughter shared her story exclusively with 8 News Now.

“We always called her a lightbulb,” Kash King said of her mother, Venus Hart. “Because she was so bright.”

King told 8 News Now everything she will miss about Hart days after her death.

“My mom would give the shirt off her back,” she said. “She always was resilient, very smart, educational.”

King said Venus was visiting her friend Tiffany at an apartment complex near Civic Center Drive and Carey Avenue on March 12 when the worst happened.

“I just can’t believe this happened to my mom,” she said.

The 48-year-old was murdered, along with Africa A. Woods-McGill, 52, and Tiffany K. Mawhorter, 42, whom King identified as Hart’s friends. A dog was also killed, according to police.

The man identified as the shooter, 43-year-old Edward Brooks, was later killed by police.

The two North Las Vegas police officers involved in the shooting were identified as Officer Kenneth Townsley who was hired in 2020 and Officer Kevin Calderon who was hired in 2022, police said.

If Brooks had survived, he would have faced charges of open murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a protected person, ex-felon in possession of a firearm, failure to register as an ex-felon, burglary with a deadly weapon, and animal abuse, police said.

“I just want people to know that we are really living in hard times,” King said. “And that you don’t have every day to get it together, life is really short.”

King said her family still hasn’t completely absorbed what happened, but now they have to focus on funeral expenses.

“It makes us feel like failures because I want to do something nice for my mom,” she said. “But I have three kids, my sister has three kids.”

Therefore, King said her family is asking the community in Las Vegas to help, so she can honor her mom Luna, whom everyone already misses so much.

“We never expected our mom to go,” she concluded. “So don’t take life for granted.”

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help.
