DA: Wichita man’s death was ‘self-defense,’ no charges

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The person who allegedly shot and killed a 19-year-old in south Wichita two weeks ago will not be charged in the case.

Dontis Carter was shot multiple times at an apartment complex in the 2700 block of S. Emporia on the night of April 9. He died at the scene.

The Wichita Police Department investigated and arrested another 19-year-old man. The WPD said its preliminary investigation suggested it was a targeted incident “as the suspect and the victim were acquainted and engaged in a dispute at the time of the shooting.”

Police investigators took their findings and evidence to Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett, who decided not to file charges.

“After a full review of the facts and evidence uncovered by detectives, charges were not filed related to the death of Dontis Carter on 4-09-24, based on evidence that the suspect acted in self-defense,” Bennett said.

The alleged gunman has been arrested before. The WPD alleges he robbed someone at gunpoint in December. Bennett said that the case is currently pending in District Court.
