D11 students get to see Air Force helicopter up close

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Students of Holmes Middle School got a special opportunity to see a U.S. Air Force helicopter up close, thanks to a collaboration with the U.S. Air Force, School District 11, and Holmes Middle School.

The event was made possible with the help of Captain Andre Young, a graduate of Holmes Middle School and the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA). Captain Young’s mother works at Holmes Middle School as the English Language Learner Paraprofessional.

The helicopter landed at around 11:30 a.m. on the Holmes football field. After landing, Captain Young and two other U.S. Air Force personnel interacted with students and answered questions about aircraft and military life. The collaboration was created with the hopes of cultivating a deeper understanding of aviation and inspiring potential future careers.

“How many of these kids think this is a thing that’s possible or a thing they think they can do? I know that they see helicopters flying around, we have Carson, we have Peterson, we have the Air Force Academy,” said Captain Young. “But how many of them have had the chance to talk with some of these people or know that ‘Oh man someone who went to this school, does this’ is incredible. I think just that little piece of engagement for the students is awesome.”
