Crab houses busy for holiday despite report showing decreased population

It's the best time of year to be a Marylander: blue crab season! However, the results from the state's blue crab dredge survey are below expectations this year. On Wednesday, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources released its 2024 Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey, which estimates a population of 317 million blue crabs in the bay this year, which is down from 324 million crabs last year. Ahead of Memorial Day weekend, crab houses were busy with people placing orders.
