CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KUSI) — As officials continue to press for solutions to the ongoing sewage crisis along the Tijuana River, a group of Chula Vista elementary school students are taking matters into their own hands.

The students are participating in a letter writing campaign to President Joe Biden and Governor Gavin Newsom in hopes of more urgent action to address the issues contributing to the flow of sewage that has plagued South Bay for decades.

The students say the initiative was inspired by an award-winning documentary that was shown in their classrooms called “The Big Dump,” which details the crisis and how it has impacted Pacific Ocean ecosystems.
