Chemung River Friends seek information about decapitated animals at Elmira boat launch

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The Friends of the Chemung River Watershed are asking the public for any information about the person/people they say are leaving decapitated animals at a boat launch in Elmira.

According to a March 16 Facebook post made by the Chemung River Friends, decapitated animals have been found in the area of the Fitch’s Bridge boat launch. The organization said that a group of volunteers doing a scheduled clean-up with the River Friends found a decapitated deer body and its head located nearby on Saturday morning. The Chemung River Friends also said that the organization received a report of a decapitated turkey being found at the boat launch the same day, and the person who made the report claimed to have found other headless animals at the location in the past.

The Chemung River Friends are asking anyone with information about the deceased animals found near the boat launch to email the organization at director@chemungriverfriends.org or contact the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Any suspicious animal deaths that appear to have been caused by humans should be reported to the DEC’s Environmental Conservation Officers by calling 1-844-332-3267. Dispatchers are available at all hours of the day to take calls about environmental and wildlife violations.
