Chemung County Sheriff’s Investigator involved in hit and run; life-flighted to hospital

BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WETM) — An investigator with the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office has been hit by a vehicle in Big Flats after trying to stop a suspect, Sheriff officials confirm.

According to Sheriff William Schrom, a Chemung County Sheriff’s Investigator is to be life-flighted to the hospital after being involved in a hit-and-run incident near county Route 64 in Big Flats on Friday, March 29.

Sheriff Schrom told 18 News that the investigator was conducting shoplifting enforcement when they were hit by the suspect they were trying to stop.

According to an 18 News reporter at the scene, police have an area of the Target parking lot closed off with state police crime scene tape, and a gray sedan can be seen within the area.

Police have not provided a description of the fleeing suspect, or their vehicle, at this time.
