Bloodhound SSC Is Back on Track to Break 1000 MPH

From Road & Track

The push to build the world's first 1000-mph wheeled vehicle is back on. After a number of delays and setbacks, Bloodhound's attempt to shatter the current 763-mph land-speed record by shrieking to 1000 mph is back on track, thanks to a new round of funding from Chinese firm Zhejian Geely Holding Group.

If the name Zhejian Geely sounds familiar, it should. The firm owns Volvo Cars, as well as London Taxi. According to Autoblog, the new sponsor will supply Bloodhound not only with cash, but with technical assistance and chase cars via the company's Geely Auto division.

The Bloodhound team describes the new investment as "the largest in the history of the project." Zhejian Geely is aiming to be the main sponsor behind the record attempt, pouring "multiples of millions" into development in order to get it ready to set a record.

The car, a 135,000-horsepower, jet- and rocket-powered, bulletproof spaceship with four wheels, has been under development since October of 2008, and is finally nearing completion. With this new funding, Bloodhound is expecting to run the SSC in late 2017, barring any more delays.

As for the previous Bloodhound tie-in with Jaguar? The British automaker is still supplying the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 to drive the fuel pump for the thirsty engine.
