Augusta man, 26, dies after driving car into canal

An Augusta man is dead after driving into the canal on Old Savannah Road at 13th Avenue on Sunday night.

Deveunte Zavien Calloway, 26, of Augusta, was pronounced dead just after 9:15 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Richmond County Coroner's Office.

Calloway was driving on Old Savannah Road at 13th Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle, crashing into a fence, guardrail and ended up partially submerged in the canal, according to the release.

Calloway was extricated from the vehicle by Augusta Fire and EMS, according to the release. He was taken to Wellstar/MCG, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been scheduled, according to the coroner's office.
