Apple Car rumors fly after new domain registration

Apple has given its car team, known as Project Titan, until late 2017 to prove the feasibility of a self-driving vehicle, according to Bloomberg.

You may not be able to buy an Apple (AAPL) Car yet — but at least an Apple Car website could be in the works.

Domain registry site WHOIS shows that Apple now owns the online domain name www.Apple.Car, fueling speculation that Apple may be developing a self-driving car on technology blogs like MacRumors and 9to5Mac.

The name doesn't point to a website, nor does Apple.Auto, or Apple.Cars, which also appear to have been registered by the technology titan. Apple did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.

As the blogs point out, Apple already has a car-related product, CarPlay, which syncs your iPhone with a car's built-in display. But the new domain registries also square with previous rumors that Apple may be developing self-driving car technology.

In September, the California DMV confirmed a meeting with Apple to review autonomous vehicle regulations in a statement to CNBC. And Elon Musk , CEO of car company Tesla (TSLA), has said Apple is hiring his former employees.

To be sure, the tight-lipped company hasn't given any public indication that a self-driving iCar is imminent, even with everyone from Nissan (7201.T-JP) to Blackberry (BB-CA) to VW (VOW3-DE) throwing down the gauntlet as this week's Consumer Electronics Show wraps up in Las Vegas.
