AAA trades batteries for trees in Earth Day tradition

TOPEKA (KSNT) – This Earth Day, a car association wants you to celebrate by recycling.

Every Earth Day for the past 13 years, AAA has donated a tree for every car battery replaced and recycled through their “Batteries for Trees” campaign. In the past 12 years, AAA has planted over 50,000 trees in national forests and hopes to reach 61,500 across the country this year.

Scott Martin, sales representative at AAA in Topeka told 27 News why it is important to recycle batteries not just for this week but all year long.

“With our environment the way that it is, we don’t wanna just discard car batteries and leave them just sitting out in the landfills and stuff for who knows how long.” Martin said. “So, this is a good way to make sure they are being disposed of properly and being recycled and replacing them with a tree.”

If you don’t have a car battery to donate at this time, there is another option! You can visit any AAA retail store to plant a tree just by donating a dollar.
