5 West Side elementary school students hospitalized after ingesting unknown substance

CHICAGO — Five students at a West Side elementary school were taken to the hospital on Monday after fire officials said they ingested something that made them sick.

According to officials from the Chicago Fire Department, paramedics transported five students from George Leland Elementary School, in the 500 block of South Lavergne Avenue, in the city’s Austin neighborhood, after they fell ill after ingesting an unknown substance.

Officials said the five students were not in life-threatening conditions but did provide details on what type of substance they may have ingested.

Currently, it is unclear how the children ingested the substance or if any other students were involved in the incident.
