Introduction
Large SUVs are still in vogue, especially following a redesign that introduces more technology and comfort amenities. Nissan modified its global Patrol SUV platform to form underpinnings for its second-generation flagship 2017 Armada (and lux Infiniti QX80) that can seat 8. The full-size family SUV with new Platinum Reserve trim for 2018 may be a smart, less expensive choice vs. the premium QX80. The Armada is built at Nissan’s vehicle assembly plant in Kyushu, Japan, and since the redo has seen sales climb. While the Armada can’t compete with the high-volume segment-leading Chevy Tahoe, it outpaces the GMC Yukon XL and Toyota Sequoia in terms of sales.
Exterior Features
The 2018 Nissan Armada features chiseled bumpers, a new V-Motion chrome and black grille, with squared-off edges for a muscular look. The 3-row family utility can seat 7-8 occupants and is offered in seven exterior colors.

Four trims can be selected: SV, SL, Platinum, and new Platinum Reserve. The 2018 Armada is available in 2-wheel drive (2WD) or optional 4-wheel drive (4WD). The basic SV trim rides on 18-in. alloy wheels and has dark roof rails. Move up to the SL and it rides on 20-in. alloy wheels and includes a power liftgate and more safety features. The new Platinum Reserve trim for 2018 features dark chrome 20-in. wheels and burnished dark chrome exterior trim (front grille, door handles, outside mirrors).
Interior Features
Inside, tall seating for the driver’s enhanced visibility has 3 standard rows but can be configured with middle-row captain’s chairs for total seating for 7-8, depending on configuration. The cabin offers 16.5 cu. ft. of cargo space behind the third row, and a full 95.4 cu. ft. of room for extra hauling if both second- and third-row seats are folded down.
The basic SV trim comes standard with an upgraded NissanConnect system with 8.0-in. color display, navigation and services (requires SiriusXM subscription), although it lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Dual-zone climate control, remote start, Bluetooth, 8-way power heated cloth seats with memory, plus a Bose 13-speaker audiophile system are standard. The SL adds a power-motion liftgate, power third-row seat, remote start, plus a rearview monitor.
Platinum and Platinum Reserve trims add second-row captains’ chairs, power liftgate, Nissan Safety Shield driver-assistance systems, new Intelligent Rear View Mirror, and a rear entertainment system with wireless headphones. Platinum and Platinum Reserve also add a power moonroof. The new upscale Platinum Reserve trim also features two-tone, stitched leather-appointed seats and Black Quartz and wood trim with "Platinum Reserve" emblem. Three interior color choices are available.
Optional Features
Four option packages are available for the 2018 Armada, including a Driver’s Group (SV only) featuring fog lights, power liftgate, towing harness, and other components. A Premium package (SL only) includes the suite of six advanced safety systems and a power moonroof. A Captain’s Chair second-row seat package and Pearl White exterior paint choice are also available.
Under the Hood
The 2018 Nissan Armada is powered by a robust 5.6-liter V-8 engine that generates 390 horsepower and 394 lb.-ft. of torque when partnered with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 8,500 pounds, and the SUV is available in either 2WD or 4WD.
Fuel Economy
The 2018 Nissan Armada receives EPA fuel-economy estimates averaging 14 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. Ratings slip to 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway for 4WD variants.
Safety
All 2018 Nissan Armada SUVs are equipped with front, side, and overhead air bag systems. Nissan makes a number of advanced safety systems available on SL trim and standard on Platinum and Platinum Reserve, including adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, blind-spot alert plus lane-departure warning, and its new advanced rearview mirror monitor. Armada comes with a standard rearview camera.
The 2018 Nissan Armada has not been rated in crash tests by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Technology
Nissan claims that the 2018 Armada is the first large non-premium SUV to offer Intelligent Rear View Mirror (I-RVM). Benefits of the safety feature include "removing" interior obstacles such as oversize cargo and rear headrests, improving visibility in low-light conditions, reducing glare, and providing an expanded field of view. A high-resolution camera in back projects an image onto an LCD monitor, built into the standard rearview mirror, that can be turned on or off with a switch.
