2018 Detroit Auto Show Preview
It’s January, and that means it is time for the world’s automotive industry to descend upon Detroit, Michigan, where the annual North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), aka Detroit Auto Show, is held each winter. Though it comes hot on the heels of both the Los Angeles Auto Show and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the Detroit Auto Show promises plenty of news. As far as new-vehicle debuts, this is what you can expect to see.
Acura
Acura will show a “prototype” of the redesigned 2019 RDX. If history is any guide, for all intents and purposes this vehicle will be an excellent representation of what you’ll be able to buy later this year, with perhaps the exception of extra body detailing and the wheels.
BMW
BMW has confirmed that it will show its new X2 compact crossover SUV and a freshened i8 plug-in hybrid sports car in Detroit this year. The i8 is expected to benefit from changes similar to those announced with the i8 Roadster at the L.A. Auto Show, while the X2 is a more stylish alternative to the boxy BMW X1, with which it shares its platform and powertrain.
Chevrolet
A redesigned 2019 Chevy Silverado is coming to the Motor City. Though Chevrolet revealed the new Silverado at an event in Texas last month, it divulged few details about its new half-ton pickup truck. Expect the full story to be told during the Detroit Auto Show.
Ford
Ford is rumored to have pickup truck news, too. The company is expected to introduce a new 2019 Ranger in Detroit, adding a midsize offering below the popular F-150 half-ton rig. The new Ranger should square-off competitively against the Chevrolet Colorado and Toyota Tacoma.
Honda
Honda has announced that it will display a “prototype” of the third-generation Insight. Planned for the 2019 model year, the new Insight sheds its quirky design for a sportier and more upscale look, which should prove more palatable to car buyers who want great fuel economy but not the pocket-protector styling that often goes with it.
Hyundai
Rumors are swirling that Hyundai will debut a redesigned 2019 Veloster sports coupe at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. If that comes to pass, it will likely share stage space with the Hyundai Nexo fuel-cell vehicle, which debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas during the first week of January.
Infiniti
Infiniti continues to hone its approach to design, and the Q Inspiration Concept shows the next evolution of its styling language. The car doesn’t come across as far-fetched, so it likely serves as a gauzy preview of whatever Infiniti will produce as a replacement for the aging Q70 sedan.
Jeep
After the redesigned Wrangler’s splashy debut in L.A., Jeep will roll out a restyled 2019 Cherokee in Detroit. The new Cherokee’s front end is new, taking a more conservative approach that is likely to make the midsize SUV more palatable to consumers.
Kia
In Las Vegas at CES 2018, Kia revealed an electric Niro concept boasting 238 miles of driving range. That car is likely to return to a turntable in Detroit, accompanied by an as-yet-unnamed debut. Could the upcoming Telluride SUV finally be ready for public consumption?
Lamborghini
If you’ve ever said that pigs would fly if Lamborghini ever built another SUV, be ready to reach for the sky to get your next helping of bacon. The legendary Italian sports car manufacturer is bringing its new Urus sport-utility vehicle to Detroit for it’s North American debut.
Lexus
Lexus is planning to showcase the LF-1 Limitless Concept, which highlights the company’s thinking about a flagship crossover SUV. Certainly, this foreshadows a production vehicle. Whether that production vehicle replaces the GX or LX or is sold alongside those rugged off-roaders remains a question.
Mercedes-Benz
Just when you thought Mercedes-Benz might never redesign the G-Class, a new one is heading for Detroit. It’s still boxy. It’s still designed for maximum off-roading capability. But it takes a big step into the modern world in terms of technology. Additionally, expect to see a performance-tuned Mercedes-AMG CLS53 based on the redesigned CLS-Class.
Nissan
Nissan has a press conference scheduled during the North American International Auto Show, but the subject matter is unknown. Rumor has it that the company will debut a crossover SUV concept, though a redesign of the Frontier pickup is far overdue, and a new Altima sedan is expected for the 2019 model year.
Ram
With Chevy and Ford showing new trucks in Detroit, Ram is not to be outdone. It will bring the redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 to the North American International Auto Show, marking the pickup’s first redesign in a decade. With this new Ram, and Chevy’s redesigned Silverado, Ford’s F-150 is facing its stiffest competition in years.
Rolls-Royce
While many luxury brands are skipping Detroit because the geographic region does not account for many sales, Rolls-Royce is bringing a redesigned Phantom to the Motor City. The price? An estimated $450,000.
Toyota
Toyota hasn’t given up on the full-size family sedan, and to prove it the company is introducing a redesigned 2019 Avalon in Detroit. No details are available as this auto show preview is written, but you can expect a bigger and more stylish car than is the Camry.
Volkswagen
A redesigned 2019 Volkswagen Jetta will roll out in Detroit, and advance sketches reveal a stylish compact sedan. That alone suggests significant improvement over the outgoing car, but VW is also promising new technologies to wow budget-car buyers.
