The MGB was one of the most important sports cars of all time, and arguably, it was at its best in fastback GT form. Yes, the classic British sports car is a two-seat roadster, but the MGB GT is just so pretty, and with a rear bench seat and hatchback, a good deal more practical than the open-top B. This one in Brooklyn is up for grabs for a seemingly reasonable $18,000, and we think you should consider picking it up for yourself.
After all, Jag E-Type coupes, Jensen Interceptors, Lotus Elan 2+2s and the like are expensive and hard to find, making a good MGB GT a good value proposition. And if you think its 1.8-liter, 78-hp inline-four isn't enough, a BMC straight-six or a Rover V-8 will fit under the hood.
This particular MGB GT was restored in 2007, and the seller claims to have $34,000 in receipts detailing the work that was done. The motor isn't original-somewhere down the line, someone swapped in a crate engine from Moss Motors with an upgraded exhaust and Webber carburetor. The transmission is actually a five-speed from a Datsun 280Z, and the disc brakes were upgraded, too.
So not totally original, but that's probably a good thing if the future owner intends to use this car. The seller disclosed that the windshield wipers are a little finicky, and while the heater doesn't work, the cabin gets plenty warm. Not entirely surprising for an old British car. Additionally, they say there's a few chips in the paint that need retouching, but amazingly, no rust.
This B GT a very pretty classic that seems like its ready to hit the road for under $20,000- that seems like a good thing to us.
